Below is the calculation.

Number of wikipedia.org monthly pageviews : 13,100,000,000 (13,100 mln).   Taken from here.

% wikipedia.org in global page views monthly: 0.530   Taken from here.

So, global page views number

13,100,000,000 / 0.530      * 100 = 2,471,698,113,207 (~2500 billions) in month (30 days)

82,366,000,000 (~80 billions) in day

Secondary calculations and results:

Average pages number viewed by average internet user (1,733,993,741 — global internet users number in 2009):

82,366,000,000 / 1,733,993,741 = 47.5 pages in day.

Now i can (very approximately) define absolute page views number of any site using alexa relative page views.

for example twitter.com 0.5193 percent of global page views

82,366,000,000 * 0.5193 / 100 = 427,726,638 pages views in day,   12,831,799,140 (~12 bln) page views in month.

Google AdPlanner give us twitter.com month page views 6.4 bln. Pretty close.

Important note: Alexa take its data from IE and Firefox (Chrome? i use some Chrome plugin that display alexa rank but i don’t know is it also grab data about my activity) users with Alexa toolbars/plugins installed. This users usually are SEO/Web pointed people. Therefore SEO/web related site always has lower alexa rank and higher alexa traffic range then site with same traffic but unrelated to web by subject.

Lets take SEO oriented site seobook.com. Alexa pageviews 0.0039.

0.0039 *2,471,698,113,207/100 = 96,396,226 (~96 mln) pageviews in month. Google AdPlanner states 21 mln.

Now will try some unrelated to Internet Technology resource kaboodle.com. Alexa pageviews 0.00299.

0.00299 *2,471,698,113,207/100 = 73,903,773 (~74 mln) pageviews in month. Google  AdPlanner states 21 mln again (just coincidence).

So we can take lower coefficient for Web related sites ~ 5 and for others 3.5.

Lets take some site with low traffic level. For example this site. Alexa page views value 0.00001.

0.00001 *2,471,698,113,207/100 = 247169 its so far from reality that not interesting at all.

Summary:

– alexa page views value make sense only for pretty big sites

– formula for counting monthly pageviews

2.Common sites
